The more I have researched the unconsciousness of surrealism, the more connections I have been able to make. As I was reading about Dali, I kept seeing more and more about the dream interpretation theories of Sigmund Freud. I decided to look into his theories (which was easy, as we are learning about them in psychology) and was able to find many connections between Dali and Freud.
Freud has very detailed theories about the unconscious and the dreaming mind. He believes that dreams are ways to put our unfulfilled and mad thoughts into something we are able to bear. Dali did the same thing that Freud was describing, except in paint. Upon meeting each other for Freud to psychoanalyze Dali (who had many psychological problems), Freud stated that there was nothing for him to uncover because Dali's subconscious was already laid out on all of his paintings. There is no doubt that what Dali was trying to express was repressed and unexpressed emotions.
The connections grow and grow so I decided that this would be an interesting direction to take my paper in. What I am thinking of would be to do my paper on the psychology behind surrealism and use the connections between Dali and Freud as a type of case study or example. Right now, I have books on each Dali and Freud, on surrealism as a whole, and on the psychology of dream interpretation. My goal is to try and explain why surrealists can think and express in the manner that they do.
This is such an interesting direction to take your paper in! I personally am not really a visual art person (as in painting) so a connection to something that interests me more makes me really want to read your paper. I didn't know Freud and Salvadore Dali ever met! I feel like that would be a very interesting pairing, and I'd love to hear more about it. It seems to me that you've really put in some effort with your research, awesome post!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds very interesting! I would have never thought to explain art or artists psychologically. I only wish you wrote more facts in your post, like specific facts that you read in your books. But it looks like you have a clear direction of where you want to go in your research paper. It should be a very interesting paper to read! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteKasey, this sounds like a very interesting concept for a paper. Dali and Freud both were incredibly eccentric and provide very unique expression of human consciousness. Do you think Dali was using painting like one of the defense mechanisms we discussed in Psychology? What have you come across in your research about how people experience/can understand their subconscious? Do you think that the subconscious has influence other artist equally as deeply as Dali? All in all, I am very excited to see your paper progress and synthesis of ideas develop!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are making all these connections, that's proof of dedication in your paper. I find it fascinating how you are including Freud in your work, that is really going to spice up your project. I also like your thesis on the psychology behind surrealism, I can tell that is going to be quite a unique research paper ( especially with Dali and Freud). My only concern is your sources; will you be able to find enough information on Freud and Dali together and how Freud analized Dali? All in all, I really like the direction your paper has turned and I would love to have the pleasure of reading it someday.
