I’ll probably be doing my research
paper on gender roles and how the art of Ancient Greece expressed their progressive
thinking. When I was in Greece last April I learned that in ancient Greece,
gender wasn’t really defined. Artist would create sculptures of woman with
curvy bodies and breasts and a beard. They carved into their buildings the body
of a lioness with the great mane of a lion into one multi-gender lion.
Alexander the Great was a known bi-sexual with many female and male partners
and it wasn’t an issue. Where gender identity is concerned, it appears Ancient
Greece was more advanced than we are today which I think is really interesting.
After reading this, the first questions that popped into my head were, are you going to focus on a type of art or a specific artist or time period? This being, those crazy Greeks made a lot of art and I feel like it could get overwhelming. Also, thinking about how progressive they were with their art, and their ideas with gender identity, are you going to talk about how that may have affected thier culture during the time the art was being made, and also today? I think this is a really interesting topic that has the chance to go in a lot of different directions, which is super neato!
ReplyDeleteCarly, when you are doing your research, will you seek out other platforms (such as rhetoric or poetry) to explore gender roles to bolster your knowledge? Also, when your look at gender roles will you look for a link to sexuality in ancient greece? I definitely believe the Greeks were in many ways more progressive than modern society. Why do you think this change occurred? Finally, do you plan to focus on a specific city state to narrow your focus?
ReplyDeleteI must say, I am truely impressed with your topic. I never knew that the Greeks were that open to both genders. I see that you have a lot of backgroud information and influences that can help you with your research. I am curious, however, in what topics you will be doing your research on? I am aware your primary focus is on art, but are you sticking with just paintings and sculpture, or are you going even further by going into poetry, architecture, dance, and even philosophy? Good luck and I look foward to reading your findings on the topic.
