For my prompt I chose #9 where Judah's family discusses how if religion is false would you chose it over truth. Why someone would chose this I believe is because if they lose the one thing that has given them truth throughout there entire lives then their life will have no meaning. They will look back on all of the wasted time that they spent learning the religions that they believed in and their parents believed in. To find out that they have been following a lie for generations. That would completely crush them.Humans in general need something to believe in. They need an outlet to look at life and be able to accept the things that happen to them and justify the world and all of its good and evil. In the words of Jack Nicholson "They can't handle the truth."
Crime and Misdemeanors has many contrasts the biggest of these would probably have to be the motivation behind the murders and the way that they are carried out. Raskolnikov kills the tewo women that he does because he is completely sick of being in a rut and being poor. Judah kills his woman because he wanted things to stay safe and happy and secure for him. They were both on opposite ends of the spectrum. They both killed but to move in opposite directions. Raskolnikov wants to go forward and Judah wants to go back.
I feel like you have a strong understanding of the conversation between Judah and his family. It's true that it can be devastating to learn something and believe so strongly that its true, to then have that thing blow up in your face and be wrong. It would be a horrible experience for anyone... a prime example of this would be how you think Jack Nicholson's famous quote is "They can't handle the truth," when really, it is and always has been "YOU can't handle the truth." Wow. And we were just talking about how living life believing a huge lie to be true can be devastating when you find out the reality of it. You must be devastated :(
ReplyDeleteBut anyway, on to your second paragraph. I too agree that the biggest different between Crime and Punishment and Crimes and Misdemeanors is the motive behind the killings. My post covered the same subject and looking past time, setting, length, and characters themselves, that is the real basic biggest difference.
For some reason I think a lot of people who consider themselves religious do not really believe. Religion these days, is less about pleasing the giant bearded man in the sky, and more about trying to make the world a better place in His name. Also, it is hard to prove a religion is totally false, but if it is done, what would make the person believe in truth instead of another false religion? It is true though that people need something to believe in and a lot of people choose God, whether that is false or not.
