Uni Ethics
Yes, I do believe in universal ethics. For example, everyone believes in laws and morals, such as no murdering, no lying, and no stealing. All cultures believe those are universal ethics. I also believe that sleeping with another man's wife should be a 'no no' for all cultures. I believe that it is a universal ethic, but some people disagree. It definitely was a universal ethic back in the old ages, but now times has changed. Men sleeping with multiple women in public seems to be more acceptable now. Before, in the olden times, it was done more in secret and frowned upon. Back then, adultery was definitely a universal ethic. I believe it should still be one now. Other ethics vary between countries and cultures. The USA has very different ethics then let's say, India. But definitely we have a few ethics in common such as murder, stealing, and lying.

Although rather brief, your post definitely displayed your beliefs. I disagree that cheating on your significant other is now acceptable-- the majority of countries that recognize marriage very much frown upon it, in my opinion. Do you think everyone really believes in the universal ethics of "no murdering, no lying, and no stealing" or that some people just conform to avoid the law? That is my personal opinion but of course you are entitled to yours. Overall, an interesting, clear post but I think you could have gone a little deeper into the topic.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Emily that cheating is no more acceptable today than in was in the old ages. Back then men were much more loose with the rules of marriage, because women were seen more as property. I also think that not killing other humans is a universal ethic but stealing and lying do not seem as concrete to me. Short but to the point post.
ReplyDeleteCheating seems to be the hot button topic of this post, and I think that cheating has evolved, specifically in regards to women. In the past, men cheating was more acceptable than women cheating, and in recent years the number of infidelities committed by women has been increasing. I think that this has equalized, a little bit, the degree to which infidelity is unethical between the sexes; however, just because has become more public, I do not feel that means people believe it is right or ethical. It simply means that more people found out. I do agree that many cultures find murder, lying, and stealing to be unethical, but I think this does not make them universal. Perhaps this comes from a difference in understanding of universal and what constitutes totality. I think you have an interesting perspective, but I wish you had gone a little further into the origins as to why these actions are considered ethical. All in all, very well-laid-out post.
ReplyDeleteCheating isn't more acceptable today i don't as opposed to accessible. The concept of cheating and the act of cheating has gotten so out of control nowadays that we kind of just accept the fact that it is possible.
